Pintor austriaco nacido en la ciudad de Tullin y fue uno de los alumnos aventajados de Gustav Klimt, y junto con Oskar Kokoschka conforman lo que se conoce por el expresionismo austríaco.
Tras la muerte de su padre a los 15 años, a los 16 años ingresa en la academia de bellas artes de Viena, que abandona 4 años mas tarde por causa de el ambiente conservador y cerrado del centro, y funda la Neukunstgruppe.
Neukunstgruppe (Grupo del nuevo arte) formado por diferentes artistas marcados por el estilo de Gustav Klimt y que demandanban una total independencia de los cánones tradicionales en pintura. El expresionismo autriaco se basó en el empleo de pigmentos metálicos, la estilización de las figuras y una marcada gesticulación durante éste período. El grupo se disolvio por la desaveniencia de Schiele a una nueva tendencia decorativa de Klimt que chocaba con el expresionismo.
En 1911 entabla relacion con Valerie (Wally) Neuzil de 17 años, con la que se tralada al pueblo de su madre, Krumau, en busca de inspiracion. Su forma de vida provocó que fuese arrestado por escandalo de corrupcion de menores, por su relacion con Wally y por retratar niños desnudos a los que invitaba a su casa y los dibujaba en posiciones obcenas. Los dibujos fueron quemados.
Tras el breve arresto, en 1913 vuelve a Viena y a la escena artistica de la mano de Gustav Klimt que le consigue imnumerables encargos.
En 1914 Conoció a Edith y a Adele Harms, dos hermanas de clase burguesa y tras cortejar a ambas, se casó con Edith que murió tres dias antes que Egon Schiele por causa de la gripe española, al igual que Klimt.
